“That’s Stupid”

A somewhat common phrase at Gamil, well at least between Beth and myself is “that’s stupid.” Sometimes that is all that is said, sometimes we elaborate. Today was one of those elaborating days… (I know kind-of a tired topic) bowl game names.

• yes sponsorship is important and appreciated, and top recognition is deserved… but isn’t there a more tasteful way? • the logo… well hmm… it sure gets me excited for some football

• at least we know where the game is

• the ultimate advertising… sponsor name twice. Can’t you just hear the announcers “Thanks for tuning in to the second annual PapaJohns.com Bowl presented by Papa Johns Pizza…”

• I like Papa Johns pizza, and I love the fact that I can order it online. No calling, being put on hold, or reading a credit card number over the phone.

• a branding equation…
(Meineke’s logo - “center”) + a stadium + a football + the word “BOWL” = a BOWL GAME LOGO
Well I guess it’s OK
• Charlotte (the location city of the bowl) does have a speedway… Lowes Motor Speedway (I could easily continue to rant on this name, but will withhold)

I know this blatant sponsorship deal for the bowl games has been going on for a while now - since the mid-80’s I think, but I still hate all of it except the Rose Bowl.
Rose Bowl, presented by Citi (now that has a little class)

Brut Sun Bowl (better than Vitalis Sun Bowl from a few years back)
Chick-Fil-A Bowl (used to be Peach Bowl - isnt that sad??)
Konica Minolta Gator Bowl (what kind of branding hodgepodge is that? Konica Minolta - get your act together, change your name to Konolta or Minica or MinoKon or Kolta)
