According to an Ocean Conservancy report last year, plastic straws are one of the top 10 pieces of trash collecting along the world’s shorelines. In Hawaii, The Modern Honolulu hotel estimated they gave out more than 612,000 straws last year (omg!) With that number in mind, they made a change by converting to paper straws, AND, instead of putting on e in every drink, they only provide straws when customers ask for them.

Single use straws may seem small, but the pollution adds up quickly, and the size of individual straws are hazardous to making life, especially turtles. The problem is, biodegradable straws are 4-5 times more than the standard plastic straw. Also, it is just habit for servers to provide a straw with every single drink, and for customers to expect it.

So, the next time you get a drink, help a turtle out and give up the straw.
